One of a kind

Original Portrait of Georg Petel by Anthony van Dyck Circa 1628

Philipp Kilian of Augsburg engraved this portrait, reversed, after a chalk drawing by Joachim von Sandrart for the latter’s Teutsche Academie der Edlen Bau-, Bild- und Mablerey-Kunste (Nuremberg 1675, pl. opposite p. 365; New Holl., IV. 354: for the drawing see K. Feuchtmayr et al. 1973, cat. no. 162, ill. 271). An inscription identifies the sitter. In 1719 and 1751 the sitter’s name was unknown. Reynolds. however, learned from Lambert Krahe ‘that there was a print of this portrait by Sandrart, and that he was a worker in silver’.

Georg Petel (1601/2-34), who came from Weilheim in Bavaria, worked as a sculptor and especially as an ivory carver. As a journeyman he probably visited Antwerp c. 1619-20, Paris briefly early in 1621 and Rome and Genova between 1622 and early 1624 (?), before returning to Southern Germany, possibly by way of Antwerp.

Early in 1625 he settled in Augsburg. He was back in Antwerp in the first half of 1628. Sandrart tells of Petel’s close links with Rubens and writes that Petel collected ‘viel cute Gemalde von Rubens und von Dick’ (‘many good paintings by Rubens and Van Dyck’) before returning to Augsburg. In W. van Haecht’s picture of the constcamer of Cornelis van der Geest (1628, Rubenshuis, Antwerp), Petel is to be seen at back right, pointing to a monumental enlargement of his ivory group Venus and Cupid.

This portrait can be dated to the first half of 1628. This is corroborated by the age of the sitter and the warm skin tone.
