One of a kind

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 41mm Chronograph

In the early seventies, the Swiss watch making industry was in serious financial trouble. With sales at an all time low, the advent and widening popularity of Quartz watches from Japan was responsible for what is now referred to as the 'Quartz Crisis'. Perceived at the time to signify a shift in consumer tastes, it seemed the desires of a watch wearing populous had changed, preferring instead a cheaper, more readily available alternative to the expensive, traditional and more complex Swiss watches of the time.

On the eve of the 1971 Basel watch fair - one Year before its launch - Audemars Piguet's Managing Director Georges Golay made a call to a Mr Gerald Genta - who at that time - had already produced a number of now iconic designs for Universal Genève, Omega and Patek Philippe.

Like all visionaries, Georges Golay had realised that only through significant and disruptive change could the Swiss industry hope to win back the hearts and minds of a seemingly disillusioned customer.

The Royal Oak was to become the watch to change an industry, divide opinion and would later become what designer Gerald Genta described as the masterpiece of his career.

Inspired by portal's on boats and the traditional divers helmet, the now iconic 8 screw octagonal bezel, all steel case and strap complemented by a "tapisserie" patterned dial was in stark contrast to the traditional offerings by other Swiss makers.

At the time of its release during April 1972, the Royal Oak was priced at 3,300 Swiss Francs which at the time was more expensive than a gold Patek Philippe and ten times more expensive than a Rolex Submariner.

Christened the Royal Oak after the British Royal Navy Battleships, collectors and trendsetters alike were won over by the watches unique design. 140 years of watchmaking history later - the Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet is amongst the most important and iconic watches in history.

At 41mm the watch wears large without feeling cumbersome on the wrist - thanks largely to its slender profile. Substantial without feeling cumbersome, the watch is reassuringly heavy and would be a handsome, masculine addition to any man's wrist.

Offered here in a white dial with date window and a chronograph complication, the watch is powered by an automatic calibre 2385 - 37 jewel - movement with a 40 hour power reserve. Box and papers are included and this watch in unworn - still with stickers - condition comes with a 2 year manufactures warranty.

One should expect to pay a list price of £17,700 when new. Delivery to all mainland UK addresses is included and will require a signature upon collection.
