One of a kind

Panerai Luminor GMT Ref. PAM00088

Widely regarded as one of the purest expressions of watchmaking design, Panerai’s allure remains - as Ralph Lauren expresses in - “…its heritage and purposefulness of each detail”. Intriguingly, when we concern ourselves with why so many revere Panerai so highly, it is perhaps that it’s visual language is so deeply connected to the problem it was created to overcome.

Without excess and without excuse, the Panerai ethos would seem to be reductionist. As both a brand and a watchmaker, it must surely stand for consistency. With only two models the mainstay of its production - the Radiomir and Luminor - the widespread appeal and lore surrounding the brand is only further enhanced by limited numbers - pieces frequently sell out prior to their release - and the pieces elegant and at once bold form.

Founded in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai, the then unknown watchmakers premises were opened in Ponte all Grazie in Florence and would also become the cities first watch making school. However it was Giovanni’s descendants Guido and Giuseppe’s relationship with Italy’s Regina Marina - or Royal Navy - a year later that would become the defining moment in the Panerai timeline.

Initially fulfilling a demand for precision pocket watches and chronographs, the relationship saw Panerai file for patents for its Radiomir watch in 1916 - so called because of the radium paste applied to its ‘sandwich’ dial - which gave the watch its superlative luminescence and it was perhaps this application and practical dependability which was the key to Panerai’s longevity and continued success.

In as early as 1918, the Italian Naval elites like Commandos Rosetti and Paolucci were enacting underwater warfare unbeknownst to the enemy. Using Panerai’s instruments to light the way as they sat astride “Siluri a Lenta Corsa” - or - slow moving torpedoes, so bright was the lume that divers were frequently covering the watch faces in mud and seaweed.

In 1936 at the further request of the Navy, 10 prototype watches noted as having a large dial, perfectly legible, highly visible in murky waters were issued to the ‘Frogmen’ Commandos under the insignia: Panerai Radiomir. It’s case and movement handled entirely by Rolex, it was to become the first underwater watch for professional military use in history.

In 1946 with a clearer understanding of the radioactive properties of radium, it was replaced with less toxic tritium and subsequently patented under the Luminor trademark. With a similar case to the Radiomir, the Luminor featured a large crown protector and a locking lever which could be used to engage the crown for easy manipulation when wearing gloves.

In 1972, Giuseppe - the last descendant of the Panerai family - died without any offspring and for a short while the then family business was run by Giuseppe’s widow before retired Navy Colonel Dino Zei was to oversee the running of Panerai. During his management, Panerai was renamed to Officine Panerai while it continued to supply the Navy with specialist instruments and timepieces.

It was however in 1993 that this largely unknown and somewhat niche watchmaker was to announce itself to the world at large. Drawing inspiration from its past, Dino presented a collection of limited edition watches to the public which promptly snapped up by collectors.

The brands first brush with fame, it was in 1996 in a boutique in Rome that Sylvester Stalone saw a Luminor Marina and was won over by the watches distinct appearance he would later recall had “star power”.

Today since Panerai’s acquisition by the Richemont Group, focused on a consumer market and gave way to the rise of the “Paneristi” - the die hard fans of the famed watchmaker. With a HQ in Italy and all manufacture, design and assembly in Switzerland Officine Panerai continues to stay true to its roots under the leadership and direction of its CEO Angelo Bonati, who has been responsible for the companies growth since 1997.

With it’s instantly recognisable cushion case and crown guard, this Panerai Luminor GMT Ref. PAM00088 presents a date window with magnifier with the added practicality of a dual time function. Engaged by pulling back the locking lever and pulling out the crown, the ‘Arrow’ hand moves smoothly to the desired secondary hour.

Boasting Officine Panerai’s own manually wound 13 1/4 lignes Panerai OP VIII Calibre automatic mechanical movement the Luminor GMT has a 42 hour power reserve when fully wound and is waterproof to 300m.

With a black dial and its distinctive pale green hue of the lume when viewed in daylight, at 44mm across the bezel, the watch is large but thanks to its supple strap and ergonomic design of its lugs is highly versatile.

Offered here in mint condition, this Panerai Luminor GMT Ref. PAM00088 was purchased new in 2008, making this example is 8 years old. It comes with all original papers, books, detailed certificates, wood-finsihed presentation box and interchangeable rubber strap and tools for changing both strap and buckle.

Delivery to all mainland UK addresses is included and will require a signature upon collection. For an International delivery quote, simply select the option "Expert Advice: Contact Dealer" stating the address where you'd like the item to be delivered to receive a personal quote.
