One of a kind

Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 Ref 116600

On the 12th of April 1961 Russian Cosmonaught Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Reaching a maximum altitude of 203 miles - Yuri aptly demonstrated post-war mans propensity to explore the unknown and lay claim to a new frontier. A little closer to home on Earth below, man was beginning to explore another unknown: the ocean.

Dark, cold, inhospitable and silent like space, a high demand for oil was driving the exploratory efforts of the French deep-sea diving company Compagnie Maritime d'Expertises 'COMEX' and the US Navy's SEALAB II program. Pioneering in their efforts without limitation, COMEX and SEALAB II had devised a method of saturation diving whereby divers breathed a mixture of hydrogen, helium and oxygen enabling them to work at greater depths than previously explored.

At these new depths, new 'rules' came into force and the once dependable Rolex Submariner - the undisputed 'tool watch' of choice - fast became redundant as it's depth rating of 200 meters was quickly exceeded. Working together with COMEX and SEALAB II, 2,000 meters - more than 3 times the depth rating of the Submariner - was to become the 'new deep' in Rolex diving watches.

These early models and prototypes became known as the Sea-Dweller and underwent a series of evolutions after the rigours of decompression and Helium saw Rolex overcome challenges such as watch crystals being forced from the watch face at high speed during testing. Continued commitment to experimentation and ingenuity saw Rolex respond by fitting a Helium Release Valve that enabled the pressure to be equalised through the expulsion of the Helium gas through the valve during ascent.

With very early versions released to the public in a limited series in 1967, it was in 2008 after 41 years, that the Rolex Sea-Dweller was retired and replaced by the Rolex Deepsea - rated to 3,900 meters. Rolex collectors and fans alike bemoaned the loss of an icon - and though recognising the technical achievements evident in the Deepsea - struggled to come to terms with its bulk which made it cumbersome and challenging to wear for those on dry land.

In 2014, six years after retiring the Rolex Sea-Dweller reference 16600, Rolex announced the Sea-Dweller 4000 reference 116600 at Baselworld and it became an instant success. Die-hard fans, collectors and appreciators alike were won over by its aesthetic which stayed true to the original watches worn by the very same divers that inspired its inception in the 60's, while others were won over by the degree of refinement and technical mastery aptly demonstrated by Rolex.

With such iconic status and a design so deeply engrained in popular culture - to the uninitiated - it is indeed quite easy to overlook the Sea-Dweller 4000: So faithful does it stay to the Rolex formula that evidence of its refinement is almost unnoticeable. The cumulative effect of these advancements and appointments however result in what many consider to be one of the first tool watches that wears a black tie as convincingly as it would a diving helmet.

The Sea-Dweller cues - matte black dial and the absence of the 'Cyclops' date magnifier - pared with the larger White Gold framed indices and hands and sapphire-like ceramic 'Cerachrom' bezel - with Platinum filled indices and markers - come together to create what could be described as 'restrained luxury'.

Pair these luxury appointments with an all solid Stainless Steel bracelet which feature Rolex's Glidelock bracelet adjustment system and the Fliplock extension link and you have a watch that enables the wearer to make a maximum 20mm adjustment in 2mm increments and add a further 26mm respectively - all without tools.

As well as benefiting from an increased power reserve of 50 hours, Rolex has even replaced the lume used on previous models with one it calls Chromalite. Unlike the more traditional lume which glows green, Chromalite has been created to glow blue because blue is the last colour in the spectrum to be lost to sight with increased depth. The result is an entrancing afterglow which when fully charged can actually be seen in day light on an inclement day.

Since its release, the watch continues to be in high demand which is no doubt helped by an increasing desire for traditional aesthetic paired with technological superiority - consider what Singer is to Porsche and what Eagle Eye is to the E-Type.

Offered here in like-new condition, this Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 Ref. 116600 comes complete with the box and all papers and books. Readers may also wish to note that the typical list price for this watch when offered New is £7,150.

Delivery to all mainland UK addresses is included and will require a signature upon collection. For an International delivery quote, simply select the option "Expert Advice: Contact Dealer" stating the address where you'd like the item to be delivered to receive a personal quote.
